The game is set in the Whitechapel district of London. Jack the Ripper commits 5 murders in 4 nights and returns to his usual hideout after each crime. One of the players takes on the role of Jack. The other players form a team of police officers who are looking for him. They must work together and consult in order to eventually lure Jack into a trap. Jack moves in secret, using stagecoaches and back alleys. If Jack manages to return to his hideout after the fourth night, he wins. If he fails, the detective team wins.

Each night consists of 2 parts with a number of phases. In each phase, either Jack or the detective team is responsible for the relevant action(s). Jack places the "unlucky" ones on the game board, then the investigation leader does the same with the patrols. Because there are blank tokens in between, neither party is certain of the exact locations. Jack then decides when he commits his murder(s). The longer he waits, the more the patrols can advance, but the more time Jack also has to escape. After committing the murder, Jack secretly writes down where he is. He can move faster with a carriage during his escape or take a shortcut through an alley. The detectives can each ask for clues or make an arrest. If they succeed in arresting Jack, they win immediately. If Jack reaches his hiding place, the next night starts. If Jack returns safely to his hiding place after the fourth night, he wins the game. If not, the detectives win!

Because the detectives are allowed to discuss everything, a fun, interactive game soon develops. Although Jack naturally does not participate in the discussion, he can follow everything and therefore draw his conclusions.
